1916 Walking Tour , Dublin

Members of Rostrevor Men’s Shed enjoyed a fantastic day out on Saturday 11th June as they headed to Dublin to take part in a 1916 Walking Tour. This was the second of three events organised by The Down Rural Community Network and Altnaveigh House, Newry, marking the centenary of both the Battle of the Somme and the Easter Rising of 1916.

The Dublin 1916 Tour offers visitors a unique insight into the history of the 1916 Rising — as it brings to life the stories, locations, and people who shaped one of the most significant moments in Irish history.

Their guide, Lorcan Collins, was superb — entertaining, full of craic, and incredibly knowledgeable. He kept the group engrossed from the first stop to the last, weaving history, humour, and human stories together effortlessly. Even the heavy downpour couldn’t dampen his enthusiasm… or the Shedders’ spirits!

After the tour, the lads had a few hours to explore the Fair City — which, in true Shed fashion, mainly meant finding a few hostelries to shelter from the rain and enjoy a bit of craic.

A huge thank you goes to Clare Shiels, Rural Development Officer with DRCN, and Wilbert McKee of Altnaveigh House, Newry, for organising such a wonderful, informative, and thoroughly enjoyable day. And thanks also to Rooney’s Coaches for getting everyone to Dublin and home again safely and comfortably.
